Mother of pearl is a valuable material with a charming variety of colors and transparencies, which preserve the richness and the mystery of the far depths of the sea.

The tradition of mother of pearl has rooted in Bethlehem a long time ago, but nowadays it risks getting lost. Few skilful craftsmen are the only ones which still preserve this age-old knowledge.

The mother of pearl workshop opened at the end of March 2005. The instructor of the workshop will convey the students the appreciation for the material, the comprehension of the importance of keeping this tradition alive, and the necessary patience to learn the working techniques.

The workshop is located on the second floor of the Artistic Centre and is provided with milling cutters, precision drills, and a particular air-aspiration system which intakes the dust produced in the carving of the raw material.

The handicrafts include crosses, pins, doves, boxes, and small nativity scenes.
